Last Week, I went fishing at a golf course lake in Scottsdale, Arizona. I was using a Bill Dance Signature Series Ultra Light Spinning rod and reel with 4 pound Berkley Trilene. I went around the lake looking for bedding Large Mouth and what do you know I see a 2 pounder and about a 7 pounder mating. I cast a little Kastmaster spoon in there and they won't eat it. I wait a little while and try back on the same bed, they were done spawing and the 7 pounder was protecting it. I spent two hours casting small crankbaits and spinner baits at it and it would just pick them up and move them out of the bed or wack it and not get stuck with the hooks. So finally a cast a hair jig at it and I almost stick it about 12 times but it didn't happen. So I just decide what the heck I am going to use a Mepps Spinner and just cast it in there. I reel it by slowly and it won't hit. I then start jigging it and I find the sweet spot, it hits it and spits it out on the other side of the nest. I try it again, and it hits it, WHAM, ZINGGGGGG, my reel starts singing with drag on full force, I start reelilng it in but a screw falls off my drag and the drag doesn't work so it just stops and the fish shakes off the hook when it jump. I then put the screw back on but it just won't anything. WOW, am I upset about losing that fish.
