what line do you like to use for topwater baits such as a popper or buzzbait?
i hate the backlashes i get using braid, but i understand it helps pull the fish out of heavier cover. any help appreciated.

I have always used mono or copolymer with floating lures. With respect to braid, if you need the strength, there is little choice. It floats, except for a few brands like Spiderwire Fluorobraid, etc. I have read varied opinions about pluses and minuses of floating braid and say frog fishing in cover. Some say the floating line keeps floating bait on the water better, while I have also read that it may tangle more. I don't have first hand experience with braid, but plan to use it with a new frog rod.

I dont know if you are fishing small mouth or large mouth, but where i live in the North West i use 12lb p line mono. normally where i am fishing i dont need much more. smallmouth cant get me in cover where i am fishing (columbia River) so i use the lightest i can get away with. i just think it gives me more action. now when i am fishing just largemouth(silver lake) i generally go to 17 lb. for safty

12-14# Green mono for me. Highland reservoir.
I'm gravitating back more and more to mono. Espcially on hard baits that I'm cranking or jerking. They are getting more expensive and that dam flouro can get nicked even on a back lash and there goes your $15 Lucky Craft. I just take it down a size and it's fine. Lot of guides opt for mono in colder water anyway.

I use braided line for all my topwater fishing, simply because it floats and doesn't detract from the action of the lure. It's strong with a smaller diameter than mono, and I have not had a problem with any backlashing...I prefer the stren braid but have had good luck with spiderwire. Good fishing....

Trebble topwaters I'll use 14-17lb mono(lighter line if I'm throwing 1/4oz & under stuff), usually Big Game or Trilene XL. Frogs, buzzbaits, & other non-trebble topwater baits it's braid without question.

The best besides braid would be Mono 12lb berkley trilene.

I used to use Mono but after losing a big fish I've been using braid. Also I am throwing 50lbs braid so it does not backlash as bad as the smaller diameter braid. Also I recommend larger/heavier topwater, and if you are using light lures I'd say swtich to spin cast. :)

One major reason why braid a good idea when frogging is because you are usually throwing into slop and weeds, and braid is especially good at slicing through that stuff. If you do decide to fish with braid though, be sure not to set the hook right away after a strike if you are throwing a frog. Give it half a second so that the fish can get the frog into its mouth for a better hookset.

I use 30lb. Stren Sonic braid a lot. No real backlash issue. Remeber the older that stuff gets, the better in handles...

I always use Power Pro 30 lb braid for topwater especially for frogs and buzzbaits. Havent tried it for poppers but im sure it would work just fine. Also never get backlashes.

I'll never use mono for topwater. Mono has too much stretch for hooksets, you want instant penetration when you set the hook. Not to mention braid doesn't sink as fast and 50lb braid is good enough. I'll go to 60lbs braid when there is super heavy cover.
