Okay, here's the deal. I have purchased more than 10 different kinds of fishing line (all 6 lb. test) in the past year, but nothing seems to be "good."
I would like to know what's the strongest.
Also, it occured to me that i have been stringing up my reels by myself. My friend told me to go to a fishing shop and have them do it. Is it worth it?

surfrage,

One of my favorite lines is Yozuri Hybrid. Check it out. And yes, it does help to have a shop spool your line on a spinning reel if you want to minimize twisting as the line is put on your reel. Some people go to the extreme of manually winding the line on their reels. That's another option if you don't want to go through the expense of taking it to a shop.

The BEST is very subjective. I personally think that one thing that is utmost import is the ability to see the line ... so I personally only use flurescent line.

Secondly, the way the line handles (line twist, stiffness) is next on the list.

Next is the toughness of the line ... and lastly the line stretch ...

Personally, I've used many lines and some of the ones I like better than others were the P-Line CXX 6# ... however, this line is a bit stiff, so it didn't handle as well as others. It does not have much stretch and ... that could be a problem in itself.

I also like the Bass Pro Excel line. This line is great, but it's VERY stretchy ... a bit larger in diameter than others. I had to step up to 8# & 10#'s ... but the line is VERY limp and would handle fine on the spinning reel. Another tempting thing about this line is that it's CHEAP!

Currently, I'm using the Cabelas Pro-Line Premium Mono. It's a bit smaller line diameter than the BPS line and a bit stiffer. But is a good compromise between the PLine and the BPS line. I'm back to 8#'s still and am going to try 6# soon. Again, this line is a VERY CHEAP! But performance has been excellent!! I can get a 1/4# spool for ~$6-7 ... EXCELLENT line for ANY money. I also use their Pro-Line Flourocarbon also. $20 per 1/4 pound spool if you buy two spools.

My choices of line:
Mono: Berkley Trilene
Fluorocarbon: Berkley Vanish
Braid: SpiderWire Camo

It is worth it to take it to the the shop if you do not know how to spool it the right way but it is pretty simple just look for an instructional video on YouTube.

The old bps excel line that was made in USA was very good line. never had any trouble out of it. I used in for all my mono needs for 20 years. Now it is made in China and it is trash. New improved formula the package says but it is garbage. Dont buy excel unless you dont mind losing an occassional fish because of line breaking. P-line cxx is the mono I use now and seaquar or vicious fluro. there are also many more good choices the fine folks here will share.

I wont be too much help on this one, but having just ordered 2 new outfits (one spinning and one bait casting) I'll be Spooling up with"Seaguar invizx" FC. I was told that this is good FC.I have only been fishing Mono for years and now i want to try something new. i'll report back when i have more to share.
Good luck

for your ? best, strongest fishing line. The strongest, smallest diameter is going to be a braid. But it all depends on what kind of fishing you are going to be doing. Line usually comes down to personal preferance. If you are fishing 6 lb like you said and want a fluro line my preference is seagar abrazix, i feel it is the best most cost effective fluro on the market and i have tried them all. You are not going to get alot of line twists that you are talking about. It is a great light fluro good for multi species applications. If you want a mono, i would go with maxima, you are going to get some color fade with the ultragreen, but it is pretty invisible. my favorite braid right now is the suffix 832 with the gore fibers, it is great and is really managible.

My biggest tip would be not to penny pinch on line, it is probally the single most important piece of equipment that is often over looked.

I don't think there is a "Best Fishin' Line" everyone has their different opinions. My favorite fluorocarbon is either berkeley vanish or stren fluorocast, my favorite mono has to be either trilene big game or trilene XL, and last but definately not least, my favorite braid is sufix performence braid (it is perfectly rounded and lays on the spool perfect.)

It's almost impossible to compare lines becauae of the games the makers play with the marketing of their products. They make 8# line and put a 6# label on it if toughness and strength is required, and put a 6# label on 5# line if softness and castibility is wanted. This may be an exaggeration, but probably not much of one. The industry is unregulated and boy do they take advantage of that. It's kinda sad and probably not much can be done but complain to the manufacturers.

On the subject of lines, what's the deal with flourocarbon. It's supposed to have the refractive property of water, but turns chalky white after use. Another maker is coming out with a camoflauge flourocarbon. If it's supposed to be invisible why are they camoflauging it? I can't help but think they are laughing all the way to the bank.

Amen to all you just said, Delaney. I've said for years that line is the biggest screw job in fishing. You don't know what to believe. Example: "Change your line often. The sun deteriorates it." In contrast: "don't leave old line lying around, it does not deteriorate." Which is it? Red hooks attract fish. Red line is invisible. Which is it?
I buy the most affordable line I can find. I fish Table Rock so I don't mess with braid. I like Vicious Elite in flourocarbon and Berkely Big Game XT in mono. Both lines can be bought in large spools and are moderately priced.

For FC, Sunline Shooter hands down

Braid: 832 for me but I've yet to try Samurai Braid and Yo Zuri.

I don't use mono, but will be purchasing some PXX for swimbaits.

I use P-Line CXX in different strengths in clear and green for all my fishing from drop shotting to casting 10 oz swimbaits. I think it is very good line and has plenty of strength and abrasion resistance for all types of fishing. Just be sure to get a bottle of KVD Line Conditioner to use on the line. I also feel that it has less stretch than regular mono.

Trilene Sensation or Power Pro Braid.
