Does anyone have any information about the night tournaments at Santa Margarita with the Friends of Santa Margarita Club? Below is the results from the last tournament.

Santa Margarita Lake Night Tournament

Lee Maddux picked up a new partner and bounced back from a two-year hiatus from tournament fishing Saturday at Santa Margarita Lake. By the light of a full moon the Paso Robles angler and new partner, Grover Beach’s John Guzzie, breezed to victory with a five-fish limit of 28.71 pounds in the first of a series of four night tournaments.

“John caught most of the fish we weighed on 6-pound test line and plastic worms,” Maddux said.

“En route back to the weigh-in at 5 mph, I hooked a big fish. His light line and my 20-pound test got tangled. I had to discourage him over untangling our lines.”

The event’s biggest fish, 9.2 pounds, came out of the water several times. The exuberant Guzzie missed his first netting attempt. Calmed down by his mentor, Guzzie made good on his next try.

“That’s the biggest bass I’ve ever seen,” the 29-year-old said.

Only five teams entered this first event jointly sponsored by Optimist Clubs and Friends of Santa Margarita Lake.
