The wind is my friend…The wind is my friend…The wind is my friend; Nope, even if I write it, read it or say it, I can’t convince myself that it’s my friend! Especially in 30 and 40 mph. winds!

Last Friday we had a very good day boating several nice fish, including some “Fat Girls” in both shallow and deep water and caught them until about 2 pm. Then on Saturday the winds came in and it was miserable. While we still added another “Fat Girl” the bite was much tougher and most all the fish came shallow. On Sunday, the winds made me think that Saturday winds were just a nice breeze, while we did boat 2 or 3 deep fish, I just couldn’t hold the boat long before escaping to the shallows. Monday, was just plain cold with air temps. hovering at 34 degrees and a good wind blowing it felt like it was minus 34 degrees, but once again we were able to put a couple of deep bass in the boat, but by noon I was just about convinced that the deep bite was non-existent. The next outing came on Tuesday, only to find the air temperature at 30 degrees, except it actually felt a little warmer than the day before, simply because of the lack of wind and the deep bite was only worse with no deep fish present, anywhere.

Once the front finally pushed through fishing became very tough out in the deeper waters and virtually forced us to fish the edges of grass around the lake. For the conditions that we were given to fish, post-front, the shallow bite wasn’t all that bad. We are catching them on shad patterned Rat-L-Traps, chartreuse / white spinnerbaits and black / blue jigs tipped with a Gene Larew salt crawl to match. The shallow fish are pretty consistent hanging near the flats and secondary points all over the lake. This time of year and pretty much the rest of fall and winter this particular pattern will stay much the same. Watch your weather and when you get 2 or 3 days of warmer weather, head to the lake. Stay out of the tackle box because most likely you’re not going to be able to force-feed them what you want them to bite.

The pictures of some of our catch are on the 2007 “Fat Girls” page on my site, www.fishinwithjeff.com. All of the fish pictured are of fish over 4 pounds, unless it is a child or woman. However, in a lot of cases those pictures will exceed that barrier throughout the year.
