Lake Fork
Water Temp: 49 - 50
Water Clarity: Clear
Most likely this will be my last fishing report for 2007, that doesn’t mean it’s my last; it’s just my last one for this year. At present I don’t have any trips scheduled for the remainder of the year, but if you would like to get in on some good winter fishing now is the time to come on and go! The fishing is pretty good right now. The water is cold, and you’re not going to put a lot in the boat, but the fish you’re going to catch are well worth it. We added one more picture to the “Fat Girls” page and I’d like to add a few more before year’s end, so give me a call. As for closing out my year; “THANK YOU” to everyone who hired me this year; I hope that I was able to be the guide you wanted me to be. I can’t control what bites, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not trying to put you on the biggest fish I possibly can and teach you a few things along the way. I’ve got plenty of dates available for spring and the rest of winter and we can go to Monticello for some spawning fish as well. We can even do split days on Fork and Monticello all in one day!
The remaining report is pretty much just like the last couple of reports I’ve put out, but it’s that time of year when the fishing conditions aren’t going to change that much. Basically all that’s going to happen is the water is going to get colder. The shallow bite as far as I’m concerned is the better bite and bigger fish are coming from the shallow water as well. The deep bite is there, you may have to hunt for it longer than you desire, but you can find them. I must admit, they’re not biting in the deeper water in too many places, nor are the bites lasting very long once you find them. I have a theory on why that’s happening, but that’s for another time.
The shallow bite is consisting of just a few baits; Rat-L-Trap, jig and spinnerbait. All are being fished over and on the edges of the greenest vegetation you can find. To find that you must be willing to pay attention to where the mud-hens or koots are. The color red is just beginning to come into play and even then the fish are being very finicky as to the color of red and how much the bait has on it. Shad patterned traps are working too. As for the spinnerbait the trusty ol’ white / chartreuse is the better combination. Then there is the jig bite. One of my favorite baits to throw! Black / blue is the color and with a blue/fleck craw trailer to match. The jig bite is really coming on strong and should continue to do so.
The shallow fish are pretty consistent hanging near the flats and secondary points all over the lake. This time of year and pretty much the rest of fall and winter this particular pattern will stay much the same. Watch your weather and when you get 2 or 3 days of warmer weather, head to the lake. Stay out of the tackle box because most likely you’re not going to be able to force-feed them what you want them to bite.
The pictures of some of our catch are on the 2007 “Fat Girls” page on my site, www.fishinwithjeff.com. All of the fish pictured are of fish over 4 pounds, unless it is of a child or woman. However, in a lot of cases those pictures will exceed that barrier throughout the year.
• I’m running a group special right now, two guides, and one night of lodging for $650.00 and this will run through spring.
• I’m trying to have “Bassin’ Classes” this winter, please visit my “Bassin’ Class” page for more information.
If I can be of more help or assistance regarding a trip or “Bassin’ Class” please contact me at 972-853-0949 / 800-965-0350 or by e-mail at jeff@jeffkirkwood.com. My web site, www.fishinwithjeff.com. If your club, organization or church is looking for a guest speaker I’d be happy to come just give me a call and we’ll get it on the calendar.
It’s that time of year to start looking at your calendar for guide trips for fall & winter and for next spring. The earlier you book your date the easier it will be to get the date(s) you want. I have dates available if you’re looking for a FULL-TIME guide. So, should you want to become one of my many valued customers and a great group of fishermen give me a call, I’d be honored to be your guide. UNTIL NEXT TIME…GOOD LUCK & TIGHT-LINES!!!
