Lake Fork
Water Temp: 50 - 56
Water Clarity: Stained with 1 – 2’ visibility
What a week of fishing it was last week. The lake was on the rise most all week long and then it rose almost a foot overnight, from Saturday to Sunday. We found the bite to be fairly inconsistent all week long. As we fished the majority of the entire lake, while we caught fish everywhere we went and then caught them on everything we threw. It wasn’t until late Saturday did the fish show any consistency for what they truly wanted to eat. Up until the weekend shad patterns and chartreuse had been the better moving bait colors. Once the weekend hit those colors seemed to fall by the way-side and red’s and oranges became the colors of choice. The Rat-L-Trap bite is doing very well and the Bandit bite is picking up daily. With the water color being what it is a black/blue Pepper’s jig is working too.
In my last couple of reports I mentioned that I felt like we were close to having our pre-spawn fishing explode. Well, I think we’re there! The fish are very shallow and can be found near the 1st break-line as well, but vegetation is the key! Without it your chances of catching any fish really fall dramatically!
Right now, you can catch fish just about anywhere you want to fish, but I recommend the major creeks on the lake as well as the larger coves. The flood-gates are open and will probably be that way for a few more days, but the weather should be stable until later in the week. As our nights are beginning to get shorter our water temperatures will be on the rise. Continue to watch the weather forecast, simply because this time of year we can and do get several cold-fronts back-to-back during the week.
For those of you who would like a guided fishing trip with me my days are really beginning to run short. What I have available through May will be posted in this report below.
The pictures of some of our catch are on the 2007 “Fat Girls” page on my site, http://www.fishinwithjeff.com All of the fish pictured are of fish over 4 pounds, unless it is of a child or woman. However, in a lot of cases those pictures will exceed that barrier throughout the year.
• I’m running a group special right now, two guides, and one night of lodging for $650.00 and this will run through spring.
• I’m holding a “Bassin’ Class” on March 1st so be sure to call or e-mail me for more information, as well as check out my web site.
If I can be of more help or assistance regarding a trip or “Bassin’ Class” please contact me at 972-853-0949 / 800-965-0350 or by e-mail at jeff@jeffkirkwood.com.
