hey is a Im-8 the best there is right now or is the lowers #'s better like im6 and im7 just wonderin before i buy my next rod.

Generally speaking, the higher the number the later, newer rod and the more graphite(I think--?) in the blank.

If you havn't bought one yet then may I recommend one of these rods (http://tacklewarehouse.com/descpageKISTCAST-KHCR.html) to you. They are a joy to use and will serve you well.

The higher the "IM" number, the higher the modulus graphite which translates into greater sensitivity and strength but also, some say, increased brittleness. There are many that prefer the lower modulus graphite blanks for the more moderate action these rods provide as compared to the faster tips and tapers that characterize many of the higher modulus graphite blanks.

I believe IM-8 is one of the more common blanks used now but there are some companies using IM-9's and many more still using IM-7 and 6.
