If there was an angler in the field more unlikely to win the Potomac River Northern Stren than Chris Dillow, you'd have been hard-pressed to identify him. Dillow was on the co-angler waiting list for the event, but had a high number and realized he had a slim chance to get in. So when he was approached by another co-angler about registering on the pro side to ensure they'd both get in, he opted to go that route.

"I had three creeks and I'd hit them pretty quick," Dillow said. "I usually caught a limit from the first one, then I'd go to the second and the third. On the last day I didn't have to go to the third one."

"My best wood had some grass on it – like dock poles with matted grass around them. On some of them I had to cast in there and pull the grass away, then I'd leave it for awhile. Then I'd come back and throw into the hole and catch one."

Winning Gear Notes:

Jig gear: 7' medium-heavy G. Loomis MBR 844C rod (http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpage.html?PCODE=GLMG3CR), Quantum PT Tour Edition 1170 casting reel (7:1 ratio), 15-pound Berkley Trilene 100% (http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpage.html?PCODE=BTFCC) fluorocarbon line, 3/8- or 1/2-ounce homemade jig (avocado, brown and orange), Zoom Super Chunk (http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpage.html?PCODE=ZSC) (green-pumpkin/blue flake) or Strike King 3X Chunk (http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpage.html?PCODE=SXDC) (blue or pumpkin) trailer.

The jig is his own creation – he calls it Dillow's Perfect Jig. It features an Arkie-style head (painted brown), Living Rubber strands and a 4/0 Gamakatsu hook. He trimmed the brush guards on his jigs to better detect the subtle bites. He added Smelly Jelly (http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpage.html?PCODE=SJS4) or Carolina Lunker (http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpage.html?PCODE=CLS) Sauce scents to his jigs.
