When the leaves begin to turn, that's when David Curtis shifts into overdrive as a bass fisherman. For some reason, he does his best work on the water in the late summer and fall.
"I feel like summer and fall are my strengths," he said. "I enjoy sightfishing and have had success when they're on beds. I fish both times of year, but just for some reason, it clicks for me now. I have that intuitiveness that works for me and things fall into place at this time of year".
"Being unfamiliar with the lake and the types of places I was fishing, I'd come to the conclusion that that's what was there in those spots," he noted. "I was shocked on the last day. I didn't expect to catch that quality off that spot. Before, a 15- or 16-inch fish was exceptional there".
"I had tried to be careful to not overfish that spot," he added. "I concentrated on getting my limit, thinking there weren't a lot of big fish there. On the last day, I pulled up without a keeper and figured it was my best shot at a limit. That's why I was so thorough.
"I just took time working the jig and fished it more thoroughly than I had on previous days. I worked it through the sweet spot and uncovered that school of largemouths."
