What's all the fuss about using fiberglass or blended rods for fishing crankbaits?

Why do you guys like the moderate actions over faster actions?

Most glass rods are used for crank bait fishing for a few reasons. First they load up better than a graphite rod and increase cast distance. This helps a lot when a deep crank bait is used to allow enough distance on the cast so the bait can reach its max depth. Also the rod has enough give, or a moderate action so the baits hooks wont get ripped from the fishes mouth on the hook set. Cranking rods do not have all of the sensitivity of say a flipping, or graphite rod since the strikes are more noticeable and do not need the extra sensation of a bite.

Hope this helps.

Makes sense.

Do they just not make moderate action graphite rods?

I'm pretty sure a lot of crank rods are moderate all graphite rods. The St. Croix Legend Tourney and Mojo are some examples of this (I think). It says nothing on their site about fiberglass in these rods

Quantum KVD blends fiberglass and graphite.

The moderate action is supposed to let the fish swallow the bait better. That said, if you wanted a MH rod for all around use, go with a fast action. It won't hurt your crankbait fishing to the point you can't catch fish or anything like that. Especially for lipless cranks, I prefer a fast action for hook setting.

There are many companies that do make graphite rods that are moderate action rods. Here are some weblinks on tw site for an example of a graphite /moderate cranking rods. This are just two of many available
