Any recommendations for a spinning reel under about $75 for a friend of mine? What's important is a nice smooth drag because he does a lot of drop shotting and light line stuff.

that's the link to all the shimano spinning reels. I recommend looking at the sahara and the sedona. sahara is about $80, but no taxes if you order from here. sedona is $60. I have not fished the sedona, but I have the symetre and my dad has the sahara. both are great reels for their price, so I imagine the next step down would not be a significant loss in quality. i would recommend the 2500 version of either. will work for 6lb and 8lb test. the 1000 is going to be too small for anything over 6 lb test in my opinion.

i have 3 symetre's and 1 sahara, and i must say there isnt much difference between the two. that i can notice at least. so the sahara would be a good bet. i certainly recommend the 2500

I was gifted a Shimano Spirex, and its pretty good for the money. However, I'm not sold on the double handle. For my UL trout tackle, I've always used the Pflueger Presidents. Can't beat those reels for the money...
But I do own some Saros and a Stradic too, so I'm not saying the Presidents are the best... just a really really good value.

I would too say a Shimano. Even their inexpensive reels are decent.
